New Garden!

A few weeks back, I got a little bee in my bonnet (as usually happens every Spring) to have a project.  I wanted to exercise my handy-woman-ness.  So I decided to ignore the fact that I have a landlord to answer to, and build my own vegetable garden in front of my place.

I followed a really simple guideline from Sunset magazine, and in no time I had a not-terribly-fancy-yet-super-functional little raised bed.

...that I'm now happy to say is overflowing. Chard, squash, peppers, herbs, and tomatoes of many kinds abound, and soon so will my dinner parties.

Rabens Saloner

Searching for easy, comfortable spring outfits these days as the sunshine gets stronger.  I just came across this Danish designer Rabens Saloner, and am loving the easy-going elegance.  Huset on Abbot Kinney carries that gorgeous lilac dress that I just might have to try on.

Heath Summer Collection

Walked into Heath Ceramics this weekend and just about died when I saw this color combo for their Summer Collection.  Corals and sands and dusty roses  are the colors I also chose for my wedding, so it's only appropriate that I get them, yeah?

Melnikov House

It's becoming obvious that I want to buy land on a hilltop and build my own house.  Is that too lofty of a dream?  This week I went to an estate sale in Silverlake that was held in a 30s modernist house designed by a female architect who lived in it for fifty years.  Everything built-in and beautiful in it's simplicity.
And recently, I came across the Melnikov House in Moscow, built by Konstantin Melnikov in 1925. With it's honeycomb-inspired windows and cylindrical outer shells, it's truly a work of art.  More pictures here

Acid Modernism

Looking forward to getting this issue on my doorstep tomorrow.  This house, designed by artist Doug Aitken, is INSANE.  And how spot-on is this wallpaper?  I mean, it takes the theory of seamlessness between indoor to outdoor space to a whole new level.

NEXT LEVEL, right?  Did I mention this house is one block from the Pacific Ocean?  Heaven.  Here's the whole article.

Bad Girls

Anyone notice all the badass babes making music these days?  Grimes is officially on repeat, but then there's these new videos from Azealia Banks and of course M.I.A., both of whom tow the line between naughty and nice.  I'm digging it.

Paris Fashion Week: Accessories

Vionnet

While having my wedding dress custom made, Madeleine Vionnet, the queen of the bias cut, has been a huge reference for me.  She was truly an architect of clothing on the female body, constructing most of her pieces first on a miniature doll.  I wish I could see her dresses in person!

Forage!

How about these foraged flower arrangements by Louesa Roebuck?  I love these magnolia tree ones - and have kind of been convinced that I need to forage my flowers for my wedding...cause that's not time consuming, right?  Louesa is quite talented - she used to own the Oakland-based shop August which also featured beautifully creative floral designs often hanging from the ceiling.

Current Obsession: Downton Abbey

This is what my weekend is going to consist of: streaming Downton Abbey until Matthew and Lady Mary fall in love.  This show is totally the Mad Men of the early 20th century, I can't get enough.  (Also, according the The Onion, watching this show is the educational equivalent to reading a book!)

Tiny Homes

A lovely video for Lloyd Kahn's exciting new book Tiny Homes by my friend Jason Sussberg.  I've blogged about Kahn's masterpiece Shelter before, but this new book is all about homes that are under 500 sq/ft.  So efficient and cute - all of the sudden my apartment seems big!

oooh catchy.

Birthday no. 26

I am officially 26!  And boy am I a lucky woman...I got a handmade silk scarf from Laura, a Balinese brass padlock from Diana, bracelets from my Swedish darling Bella, a beautiful Arts and Crafts card from my sister and a necklace from the lovely Kaila.  I also got to share a couple of dinners with some of the best people in the world (in my unbiased opinion).  Big things are happening this year, so here we go!
