New Garden!

A few weeks back, I got a little bee in my bonnet (as usually happens every Spring) to have a project.  I wanted to exercise my handy-woman-ness.  So I decided to ignore the fact that I have a landlord to answer to, and build my own vegetable garden in front of my place.

I followed a really simple guideline from Sunset magazine, and in no time I had a not-terribly-fancy-yet-super-functional little raised bed.

...that I'm now happy to say is overflowing. Chard, squash, peppers, herbs, and tomatoes of many kinds abound, and soon so will my dinner parties.

LA Weekend

With the 405 freeway closure and the supposed traffic that is to envelope the city this weekend, I have officially designated Saturday and Sunday as staycation days, and I can't wait.  I shall be accomplishing the following:
1.  Getting my ass kicked at a couple classes at Pop Physique.
2.  Work-day at my garden.
3.  Eat good neighborhood food, most likely here.
4.  Read my new book by Patti Smith while tanning on a rooftop.
5.  End the evenings with wine and a continuation of Docfest 2011 in my living room.

Lotusland

Have you guys ever heard of Lotusland?  It sounds incredible.  In 1941, Polish socialite and Opera singer Madame Ganna Walksa purchased the estate Lotusland in Santa Barbara and dedicated her life to turning it into a whimsical botanical garden.  Since her death in 1984, the garden has been left to the public, and it boasts a butterfly garden, an aloe garden & a cycad garden, for which she auctioned off a million dollars worth of her personal jewelry collection to finish before she died.  The place sounds enchanting, and since I've been dying to make weekend road trip to Santa Barbara,
I just made reservations for their Cacti & Cocktails event on June 11.
Hooray for gardens and good weather!
